The head of the Eastern Orthodox Church, the
patriarch of Istanbul (Constantinople). The
Bishop of Constantinople was recognized as
having equal rights with the Bishop of Rome
451, and first termed `patriarch' in the 6th
century. The office survives today but with
only limited authority, mainly confined to
the Greek and Turkish Orthodox churches.
